Sex Workers Can Now Legally Solicit Johns On The Street In Victoria

A new law makes it legal for sex workers to operate on Victoria‘s streets. The change comes after lawmakers decided sex workers would feel safer and be able to access support more easily. Consumer Affairs Minister said the shift was “an important milestone for sex work decriminalisation in Victoria.”

Ingrid Stitt, Workplace Safety Minister in Victoria, explained that everyone deserves to feel safe at work: “With a dedicated Sex Work Safety Team within WorkSafe, we’ll make sure sex work is regulated appropriately, with the best guidance and procedures in place to keep workers safe.” International studies have shown that allowing sex workers to solicit sex “doesn’t increase sex work, it just makes it safer,” the Workplace Safety Minister said. “It just enables those sex workers to be able to report crimes against them and, given the nature of the work, they can often be vulnerable to that.”

Victoria Decriminalizes Sex Work After Decades-Long Battle From Sex Workers

Canada is celebrating another major victory for the decriminalization of sex work. Victoria, BC has passed legislation to become the third jurisdiction in the nation to decriminalize sex work, ending a decades-long wait for advocates. The upper house finally voted in favor of a bill to repeal offenses and criminal penalties for consensual sex work between adults.

The Sex Work Decriminalisation Act 2021 will partially abolish street-based sex work offenses and associated public health offenses, and will also strengthen anti-discrimination protections, making it unlawful to deny sex workers accommodation. “The number one benefit for sex workers is we no longer will have to fear the police if something goes wrong at work,” the Sex Work Law Reform spokesperson told reporters. “This bill is for everyone who has been working under these draconian laws that have not protected us,” added Reason Party leader Fiona Patten, a former sex worker who led Victoria into decriminalizing the industry.
