Cheap ‘Morning-After’ Pill Could Curb STD Surge

A cheap antibiotic could help slow the growing US epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases for gay men, researchers say. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is drafting recommendations to consume doxycycline—used to treat bacterial infections and prevent malaria—to stave off STDs. The CDC says the medication would be taken like a “morning-after” pill.

The study, published in New England Journal of Medicine, found that taking a 200-milligram pill of doxycycline within three days of unprotected sex reduced bacterial STIs by two-thirds every three months. The yearlong study followed 500 gay men, bisexual men and transgender women with prior STD infections. The CDC noted the medicine will not “be a magic bullet,” describing it instead as “another tool” in combating the gay STD epidemic.

France Reimbursing Citizens For Condoms

adult-1822413_640France is showing its support for safe sex by reimbursing for condoms. Having safe sex now means saving French residents money and protecting against STD’s. France’s Minister of Health announced that citizens can be reimbursed for Eden-brand condoms if they have a prescription from a doctor or a midwife.

These French-made condoms are cheaper than name-brand ones and are “the first to be approved for reimbursement by France’s national health authority.” The measure, which was announced shortly before World AIDS Day, is an effort to prevent HIV, AIDS, and other sexually transmitted diseases. The policy sends “a strong signal that it [a condom] is not a sex toy but a real and indispensable prevention tool,” said the maker of Eden condoms.

Going Bare Down There May Boost the Risk Of STDs

1435975150441.cachedA new study in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections found that regular pubic hair removal is linked with an increased risk for herpes, syphilis and HPV. According to the research, people who “mow their lawns” at least once in their lifetimes are nearly twice as likely to have an STD. And “extreme groomers,” or those who shave it all off more than 11 times a year, were more than four times as likely to have had an infection.

“We were surprised at how big the effect was,” says urologist and lead researcher of the study. “Right now, we have no way knowing if grooming causes the increase in risk for infections. All we can say is that they’re correlated.” The study surveyed about 7,500 men and women between ages 18 and 65 about their grooming habits. About two-thirds of men had manscaped and more than 80 percent of women shaved their pussies. Researchers aren’t sure what the connection is at this point, but they said it makes sense that shaving and waxing could make you more vulnerable to infections due to “microtears and cuts” that might be unhealed during sex, making it easier for viruses and bacteria to enter the skin. As one researcher says, “Pubic hair is there for a reason.”

Study Finds Men Would Be Less Likely To Use Condoms If the Woman Is Hot

costumes-625440_640A new study shows another example of the dangerous things a man will do for the love of smoking hot woman. As The Washington Post explains, “When faced with the proposition of casually sleeping with a pretty woman, men are more eager to forgo condoms, according to a new scientific survey, than if they think their fling is less attractive.” So what is it about condomless sex with an attractive woman that excites men so much?

The study’s 51 participants ranged in age from 19 to 61, and all ranked pictures of women on a scale from 0 to 100. Invariably, the closer the men ranked a woman to 100, the more willing they were to have unprotected sex with her—even if they believed the woman might have a sexually transmitted disease. The study’s co-author believes that this could have to do with evolutionary reasons, where a man would want to reproduce with a more attractive woman because attractiveness is perceived as a sign of health. Or it could be about taking a risk to acquire the so-called “high status” associated with sleeping with a hot lady. Since the sample size was small, the researchers want to continue to look into this, especially with gay men.
