New York Senator Introduces Bill To Decriminalize Sex Work In The State

A new bill aimed at decriminalizing the act of selling sex in New York was introduced in the state Senate. New York Senator Liz Krueger recently introduced the Sex Trade Survivors Justice & Equality Act, which was created with the help of sex workers and advocates. The bill is based on the so-called “equality” or “Nordic” model, which would repeal the crime of selling sex.

“We must empower and support people currently or formerly in the sex trade,” Krueger said in a tweet about her support of the bill. The bill aims to give and get sex workers help, instead of jail sentences, in part by preventing the “unlicensed practice of a profession” arrests of people working in illicit massage parlors when there’s evidence of exploitation. “We want to make sure that instead of criminal penalties and jail, we are providing health care, mental health care, etc.,” she added.

Prostitutes demonstrated in Hamburg’s red light district to demand that Germany’s brothels be allowed to reopen after months of closures amid the coronavirus lockdown. Bolivian sex workers are preparing to return to work after lockdown—with gloves, bottles of bleach and see-through raincoats. The thigh-high “biosecurity suits” are among a number of recommendations in a 30-page coronavirus security manual drawn up by the Organization of Night Workers of Bolivia (OTN). The group is pushing authorities to lift the restrictions put in place during the lockdown.

One sex worker demonstrated how she could layer on top a paper face mask, plastic visor, gloves and a raincoat—in addition to donning a thong, a sequined eye-mask and a sheer, crotch-height dress for work. She gave a demonstration of how she sprays a bleach solution on the pole she uses to dance for clients at the brothel that she operates with several other women. “The biosecurity suit will allow us to work and protect ourselves,” she said. “Our clients respect the issue of safety, that we are taking these measures for our security, but also for theirs.”

Swiss Brothels Will Reopen
