Amsterdam Mayor Opens Brothel Run By Sex Workers

In an attempt to empower sex workers and improve working conditions in the red light district, the mayor of Amsterdam will open a brothel run by the prostitutes themselves. The new brothel occupies 14 “windows” across four buildings in Amsterdam’s red light district, allowing about 40 sex workers to operate out of the premises. “Everything in this project, from the statutes to the decoration of the rooms, is thought out by sex workers,” said one of the sex workers involved. “It is my hope that it will offer pleasant workspaces, where sex workers can be who they are and feel welcome.”

The goal of the initiative is for sex workers to be able to work independently, free to determine their own rental terms and working hours, and to socialize and help each other deal with things like negotiating and unpleasant customers. It’s being dubbed the “municipal brothel” because of the city’s role in the project, but the hope is to “emancipate” sex workers by giving them a chance to “acquire knowledge, experience and a position to develop themselves,” as a person on the initiative explains. According to one male prostitute, “All sex workers working together on a shared, emancipatory goal. That’s something very special.”

Michigan Finally Wants To Ban Police From Legally Having Sex With Prostitutes

Soon, Michigan police might need to give up a very unique job perk. A bill advancing in the state legislature would ban Michigan police from having legal sex with prostitutes during undercover investigations. Lawmakers say Michigan is the last state in the union that offers police officers immunity from prosecution if they have have paid sex while undercover.

“This is pretty significant when you’re the only state left in the country who still makes allowances for undercover police to accommodate sexual intercourse. And finally we’re to the point where we need to eradicate this law and repeal it and get rid of it,” Republican Senator Judy Emmons said. The Michigan police claim that they do not take advantage of the immunity offered under the law, but regardless, “it’s still on the books,” as Emmons says. The legislation will move on to the state House after it was unanimously approved in the Michigan Senate. God bless America!

US Customs Block Man After Reading His Profile On Gay Dating App

A Canadian man was denied entry into the United States after US Customs read his profile on the gay hookup app Scruff. He described them “grilling” him, asking “‘Is this your email?’ and it was an email attached to a Craigslist account for sex ads.” Though there was no proof that the man was a sex worker—in fact, during his second attempt, he brought pay stubs from his employer and bank statements—he was still not allowed into the country. Not only is this type of flagrant violation of privacy tragically all too common for non-Americans, but as a Canadian lawyer says, “Their agents need cultural awareness training to not misunderstand that people who simply are leading a normal sex life are not prostitutes.”
