Four Hours Of Exercise A Week Boosts Women’s Sex Lives, Study Says

Four hours of exercise a week can work wonders for a woman’s sex life, research shows. Scientists found it boosted arousal and increased the chances of orgasm. Regular physical activity is known to reduce the risk of erection problems in men, so Italian researchers wanted to see if there were similar effects in women, recruiting 322 women mostly in their mid-forties for the study.

The women were asked about their sex drive and how much they exercised, and had ultrasound scans to measure blood flow to the clitoris. The results, published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, showed those doing less than one hour a week of activity had high levels of sexual dysfunction—and those doing more than six hours a week had even worse sex lives. Those averaging four to six hours weekly—or 35 to 50 minutes a day—had the best chance of being sexually fulfilled.

Studies Reveal The Link Between Sex Drive and Birth Control

Two studies published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine finally put to bed the myth that birth control can kill a woman’s sex drive. While it’s true that some women do experience a lower sex drive on the Pill, researchers concluded that several factors are more important when it comes to a woman’s libido. Researchers focused on women in long-term, monogamous, heterosexual relationships, and measured their desire for solo sex versus their desire for sex with a partner to see how their relationship choices affected their sex drive in conjunction with being on birth control.

The study found that women on non-hormonal birth control had a higher solitary sex drive and that women on hormonal birth control had a higher desire for sex with a partner. It also found that, “while birth control did have an effect on sex drive for some women, relationship length and age were much stronger predictors of sexual desire than the type of contraception a woman was on,” reports Bustle. Researchers admit that drawing conclusions about women’s desire can be tricky, but that the study ultimately “sheds light on how different types of contraception can affect our sexual appetite and desire.”

NEWS: Graphic Shows 55 “Usual” and “Unusual” Sexual Fantasies by Gender

A Reddit user made a handy graphic which shows 55 sexual fantasies broken down by the “most usual” to the “most unusual,” and by gender, based on the statistical findings of a new study called “What Exactly Is an Unusual Sexual Fantasy?” published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. According to the authors, the “main goal of this study was to determine which sexual fantasies are rare, unusual, common, or typical from a statistical point of view among a relatively large sample of adults recruited from the general population.” They based their findings on a sample of 1,516 adults they interviewed on the internet (799 women; 717 men) who ranked 55 different sexual fantasies. Here’s what the researchers found:

“Only two sexual fantasies were found to be rare for women or men, while nine others were unusual”—some of these include peeing on a partner, cross-dressing, rape fantasies, exposing oneself in public, and having sex with a stripper or prostitute. But, for the most part, most people share many of the same erotic fantasies, regardless of gender: “thirty sexual fantasies were common for one or both genders, and only five were typical.” The most common sexual fantasy for both men and women are submission and domination themes. Some other shared fantasies for both genders are fucking in a public place, fucking someone who is not your spouse, having a threesome, watching two women have sex, giving head, and getting tied up. These hot, sexy, very “usual” fantasies go on and on (check out the graphic below).

All this talk of sexual fantasies is putting us in the mood to act out some of ours—and yours! Let’s make these fantasies a reality!
