During this politically fraught time when Utah legislators and other conservatives want to ban porn, social science research on sexually explicit material has never been more relevant. Recently, a study published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology has disproven the oft cited claim that pornography causes men to lose interest in their partners. Furthermore, the new study shows that the influential 1980 study which has frequently been cited as evidence for the destructive effects of porn on the male brain simply does not hold up to scrutiny.
In the 1980 study, heterosexual men reported feeling less attracted to their partners after seeing hot pornographic pictures, even describing themselves as being less in love. But in 27 years, the study’s never been replicated—and it involved just 63 men. The newer study conducted three trials with 10 times as many participants, “and found that looking at centerfolds made no difference to male participants’ assessments of their attraction to their partners, or how much love they felt for them,” reports IFLScience. Researchers think that maybe since porn has become so ubiquitous, the once real effect has simply worn off. But one thing’s for sure: porn ain’t the cause of society’s problems, Utah.
