Indonesia Will Make Sex Outside Marriage Illegal

Indonesia’s parliament is expected to pass a new criminal code this month that will penalize sex outside marriage with a punishment of up to one year in jail. The ban also applies to tourists, officials have confirmed. Cohabitation before marriage will also be banned.

“We’re proud to have a criminal code that’s in line with Indonesian values,” said Indonesia’s deputy justice minister. A previous draft of the code was set to be passed in 2019 but sparked nationwide protests—tens of thousands of people demonstrated at the time against a raft of laws, especially those seen to regulate morality and free speech, which they said would curtail civil liberties. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, has hundreds of regulations at the local level that discriminate against women, religious minorities, and LGBT people.

Bali Cops Hunt For ‘Secret Porn Villa’

Bali authorities are on the hunt for porn stars that have been making XXX entertainment at a local villa. Bali cops didn’t know at first the precise location of the villa that the porn stars used—but once they found it, the porn stars had already fled. Indonesia has stringent anti-pornography laws, so if caught, the porn stars could face substantial legal penalties.

Furious Indonesian cops are still searching for at least five adult actors after the location of several porn videos doing the rounds on TikTok was exposed. In a TikTok video promoting their recent efforts, the porn stars luxuriate in a lush setting in Bali. The caption reads: “Welcome to the porn villa”— the video has been viewed well over 1 million times.

Indonesia Is Trying To Outlaw Sex Outside Of Marriage

The country’s parliament agreed to the President’s bill, which they hope to become a law, very soon. “The state must protect citizens from behavior that is contrary to the supreme precepts of God,” a religious politician said.

As part of the code, a person who has sex with someone who is not their spouse could spend a year behind bars, if a close family member lodges a complaint. Same-sex couples will be heavily impacted by the law, as Indonesia does not recognize gay marriage. Additionally, unmarried couples who “live together as a husband and wife” could spend six months in jail or be fined 10 million rupiah — or $710 — equivalent to three months’ salary for many Indonesians.
