Butt Plugs Were Originally Sold As Miracle Cure For Headaches

Some interesting XXX history: in 1940, butt plugs were marketed as a headache remedy. “First warm dilator in warm water; then lubricate outside of dilator with Dr Young’s Piloment (or if it is not available, with vaseline) and while in a squatting position—or while lying on the side with knees drawn up—gently insert in the rectum as far as the flange or rim,” the instructions read. Dr. Young advised users to gradually work their way up the largest size—the “Extra Length” dilator number five, which was more than an inch and a half (3.8 centimeters) thick—and keep it in for at least 10 minutes, or up to an hour for best results.

The product also claimed the butt plugs could give a more refreshing sleep, relieve foul breath and bad tastes in the mouth, sallow skin, acne, anemia, lassitude, mental hebetude, insomnia, anorexia, headaches, indigestion, nervousness, irritability, and cold extremities. In a court case with an extremely pleasing name—U.S. v. 67 Sets of Dr. Young’s Rectal Dilators and 83 Packages of Dr. Young’s Piloment—the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled that not only were the claims not backed up by evidence, but that the device “would be dangerous to health when used with the frequency and duration prescribed, recommended, or suggested in the labeling.” The products were ordered to be destroyed before they even found out that Dr Young had also claimed in a medical journal that the rubber sex toys would be effective in curing insanity.

The Very Raunchy History Of Sex In The Middle Ages

Katherine Harvey’s illuminating novel The Fires of Lust: Sex in the Middle Ages offers a peek into the sexual beliefs and bedrooms of ordinary medieval men and women living in western Europe. Erections were believed to be the result of a “windy spirit,” meaning those suffering with impotence were advised to eat foods which caused wind and bloating like chickpeas. Too much sex was said to be very dangerous because it could cause the body to dry out, leading to hair loss, heart and lung problems, and kidney failure.

German Dominican friar Albertus Magnus recounted the story of one unfortunate monk who died because he lusted over a woman so much his “brain had shrunk to the size of a pomegranate, and his eyes had been destroyed.” Medieval doctors believed, however, that there was a connection between sexual pleasure and reproduction: it was thought that both men and women had to have an orgasm simultaneously for conception to occur. With this in mind, foreplay was encouraged by medieval doctors—with some even suggesting men apply chewed peppers to his penis to cause his wife “incredible delectation.”

6 Sex Facts Your History Teachers Never Told You

magicwandarthistoryKinksters have been around for a long, long time. From goat eyelash cock rings to stone dildos, our ancestors have been getting freaky since antiquity. Here are 6 historical sex facts you definitely never learned about in History class.

  1. The first cock rings were made from goat eyelashes
Cock rings made from the eyelids of goats were commonly used in China around 1200. The eyelashes were left on to add a little bit of extra stimulation.
  2. The first dildos were made of stone
The oldest stone dildo is around 28,000 years old. Later versions were covered in leather to make them softer and warmer.
  3. Hardcore porn took off in the 1920s
Almost as soon as cameras were invented, people started taking sex photographs. Many showed penetrative sex as well as “non-standard” sexual practices like lesbianism.
  4. King Edward VII spent a lot of time in a French brothel
In the 1880’s, King “Bertie” would regularly frequent one of Paris’ most exclusive brothels. He spent so much time there that an erotic chair was built just for him to use as he fucked a series of French courtesans (check out a picture below).
  5. Sex clubs were all the rage in the 1700s
Notorious sex clubs were very popular, like “Beggar’s Bension” in Scotland. Members would meet to read scandalous banned books and have sex with willing girls.
  6. By 300AD, Rome had 45 brothels
They were so popular that they wouldn’t open until the afternoon because otherwise no one would go to work in the morning. “Road signs” shaped like cocks pointed the way to the nearest pleasure house.

7 Strange Things Humans Used To Think About Sex

Humans have had some very strange beliefs about sex throughout history. From using sparrow brains as a kind of Viagra to beliefs about fucking in the afterlife, there have been some pretty out there myths about sex. Here are the weirdest ones (check out more below).9876280146_6533018f8a_z

  1. Erections were caused by flatulence
The Roman physician Galen thought that erections were caused by “wind” inflating the penis, so basically any foods that made you gassy were considered aphrodisiacs.
  2. Period sex could drain the “lifeblood” from men
Guess there were no blood hounds back in the day…
  3. Nobility thought their purity would be marred by any kind of sexual activity in the air
Apparently, people believed that sex could permeate the air and make it unclean. One supreme pontiff barred people from fucking while he was in town, just in case.
  4. If you had sex and then rode a horse, bad things would happen
I will just leave the full Westermarck quote for you all: “If a person who is sexually unclean rides a horse, another holy animal, the horse will probably get sores on its back, and the rider will tumble down, or be late in arriving to his destination, or will not succeed in business, or will have boils, or even die.”
  5. Eating sparrow brains could improve your sex life
The ancient Greek goddess of love and sex, Aphrodite, was said to hold sparrows sacred, so sparrow brain was used to increase performance.
  6. Foot binding was shorthand for good sex
The ancient Chinese practice was so popular in part because it was believed to strengthen vaginal muscles. Tiny feet signaled a better sexual experience to many men!
  7. You could have sex in the afterlife
Egyptians believed the afterlife was just a continuation of life on earth—so of course you got to bone! Tombs famously depict sexy ladies for this very purpose.

Looking for something a little out there yourself? You don’t need tiny feet and the afterlife for a great sexual experience at NiteFlirt!

Erotic Murals of Pompeii’s Brothel Showcase Sex Lives of Ancient Romans

volcanoPompeii is well known for being one of several ancient Roman metropolises preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius, a catastrophic volcano in the year 79. What it’s less famous for is its history as a highly sexual culture. The buried city is literally covered with carvings of phalluses—including a bronze chandelier that depicts a flying dick and a mural of Mercury with a massive erection!

And now, new images of an excavated brothel are giving even more clues about the randy shenanigans of the naughty Pompeiians. Historians think the sex acts depicted on the walls of the brothel called “Lupanar of Pompeii” were advertisements to potential clients. They include images of same-sex and opposite-sex couples, since the prostitutes were both men and women. The brothel, which was five stories high and equipped with a balcony where sex workers called down to potential customers in the street, is the only one known in the city. If you can’t get to Pompeii to see the remains of Lupanar in person, tune in to CBC’s The Nature of Things to take a tour through the notorious brothel.
