Dr. Ruth Says 90-Year-Olds Should Still Have Sex

Renowned sex therapist, 93-year-old Dr. Ruth Westheimer, has advice for her peers: keeping having sex. But there’s a caveat—the sex has to be good. She says, “If they have a good partner, they should have sex. If you don’t have a partner, they should satisfy themselves. Period. There is no age limit.”

Dr. Ruth went into sex therapy many decades ago to help “strengthen family life.” She said growing up as a Jewish person, “sex was never a sin, but an obligation—for a husband to satisfy his wife—period.  I realized I did not know enough and I just wanted people to know about contraception and STDs.” Speaking of her own “good” marriage, she said her husband was very supportive of her career: “He went with me to NBC every Sunday night for 10 years when I did my ‘Sexually Speaking’ program,” she said.

One of the seniors to feature in the film explains that she wants older folks to “understand that sex can, in many ways, be better than ever.” That might mean accepting the need for supportive pillows or the assistance of sex toys, since “sex might not feel or look the way it did when our hormone rush propelled us into jet-steam sex.” The directors want to show that aging puts some constraints on sex, but it can also put people in touch with communication, creativity, authenticity: “At our age, sex won’t happen unless we have these ideas about how to communicate about it and how to compensate for physical issues and how to talk about sex and how to have sex that isn’t just penetrative sex,” says Price.

Researchers analyzed data from nearly 7,000 people with the average age of mid-60s and found that those who have a healthy sexual bond with their partners were much happier.

“Health professionals should acknowledge that older adults are not asexual, and that a frequent and problem-free sex life in this population is related to better well-being,” researchers said. A Sexpert isn’t surprised by the study’s findings: “People are having better sex when they’re older, partly because they feel less inhibited and free from judgment.” A couple who’s been together for six decades and has regular sex adds, “It’s utterly fantastic. [Afterward], we lie side by side getting our breath back and our heartbeats down and say: ‘Thank you, God, for one more time.’”
