NEWS: Graphic Shows 55 “Usual” and “Unusual” Sexual Fantasies by Gender

A Reddit user made a handy graphic which shows 55 sexual fantasies broken down by the “most usual” to the “most unusual,” and by gender, based on the statistical findings of a new study called “What Exactly Is an Unusual Sexual Fantasy?” published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. According to the authors, the “main goal of this study was to determine which sexual fantasies are rare, unusual, common, or typical from a statistical point of view among a relatively large sample of adults recruited from the general population.” They based their findings on a sample of 1,516 adults they interviewed on the internet (799 women; 717 men) who ranked 55 different sexual fantasies. Here’s what the researchers found:

“Only two sexual fantasies were found to be rare for women or men, while nine others were unusual”—some of these include peeing on a partner, cross-dressing, rape fantasies, exposing oneself in public, and having sex with a stripper or prostitute. But, for the most part, most people share many of the same erotic fantasies, regardless of gender: “thirty sexual fantasies were common for one or both genders, and only five were typical.” The most common sexual fantasy for both men and women are submission and domination themes. Some other shared fantasies for both genders are fucking in a public place, fucking someone who is not your spouse, having a threesome, watching two women have sex, giving head, and getting tied up. NEWS: Does ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ give BDSM a Bad Rap?

There’s a lot of misconceptions about submissive women who enjoy BDSM: that they’re passive out of the bedroom, uphold traditional gender roles, or enjoy “abuse” outside of the context of being dominated during sex. Submissive women in real life who indulge in BDSM largely do not carry on the dominant/submissive role outside of sexual contexts—i.e, they can be in control of their lives in every other way; they just enjoy the exhilaration and excitement of giving up control during sex. In Fifty Shades, the submissive woman character wants to tame, change, and marry her rich, dominant boyfriend, and essentially puts up with his abuse (though she does seem to enjoy it sexually too) for this reason. But in real life, submissive women understand that emotional and physical abuse that one cannot control is different from giving up power willingly and getting off on that.

NEWS: Britain censorship laws crack down on BDSM porn

Fetish porn producers in Britain are yelling “bloody hell!” this week after a new set of censorship laws aimed at BDSM internet porn. And the Brits who want to get their rocks off to some good old fashioned kinky BDSM aren’t happy about it either. That’s right, the UK prudes have just banned a variety of sex acts from porn videos made in the UK, most of which are BDSM related. As Frankie Mullin at Vice explains, “That means that British pornography producers will no longer be able to offer content online that couldn’t be bought in a sex shop.”

Basically, the censorship laws say that all streaming content must not contain anything that might corrupt the morals of impressionable, under 18 people—and to the people who passed these laws, that mostly means fetish, BDSM porn. Some of the specially restricted BDSM porn includes: caning, spanking, aggressive whipping, penetration by any object “associated with violence,” physical or verbal abuse, urolangia (i.e., “water sports”), strangulation, and, bizarrely, facesitting. The last one just seems excessively prudish, and sexist—they also banned female ejaculation and fisting. These new rules just seem like another way to censor perfectly consensual BDSM acts and further stigmatize a kinky niche sex market.
