‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Was The Dominant Book Of The Decade

4707352284_1e4de7d166_zSex—especially kinky sex—sells. “Fifty Shades of Grey” by British author E L James sold 15.2 million copies following its release in late 2011, grabbing the title of best-selling book of the past decade. Even more astounding, the Nos. 2 and 3 best-sellers of the decade were the other two novels in the BDSM trilogy: “Fifty Shades Darker” (10.4 million) and “Fifty Shades Freed” (9.3 million).

The books were released within weeks of one another at the start of the decade by Random House and would sell more than 100 million copies. They also enjoyed a renewed mid-decade surge thanks to the racy 2015 movie. The trilogy combined earned $35 million in the US according to NPD Bookscan, which tracks the majority of book sales worldwide.

Woman’s Attempt To Recreate Kinky Sex Scene Goes Very Wrong

The woman bound herself to her steering wheel and gagged herself with tape—only she bound and gagged herself a little too well. A passerby found her blaring her car’s horn repeatedly by slamming her face into the steering wheel, with her wrists lashed to the steering wheel with cable ties, and duct tape coiled around her neck.

The terrified bystander worried that this was a serious crime scene — but cops soon determined that the woman had done it to herself. “I wanted to recreate a scene from ’50 Shades of Grey’ but it got out of hand,” the woman told her rescuers. A camper on the beach — notorious as an outdoor sex spot — told the paper that the woman may have been bound to the wheel for quite a while, as he heard a horn blaring for about two hours.

Yes, new data from Flexport shows the United States is having a sex toy renaissance. “After analyzing millions of pounds of sex toy shipments from the past five years, Flexport’s data shows that the country’s appetite for bedroom gadgets increased dramatically in 2012 and has remained at a high level since,” reports Buzzfeed. So what could be behind the recent uptick in bedroom experimentation?

Well, 50 Shades of Grey might have something to do with it. The erotic trilogy’s first book published in mid-2011 and sex toy shipments really skyrocketed in the months following. Flexport also found that California is the state which imports the most sex toys, with New York as the runner-up in freakiness. With almost 3 million pounds of sex toys imported last year, China will really need to crank out those naughty devices to keep up with demand!
